What is a School Counselor?
A school counselor is also called a guidance counselor. These are people in your school that you can talk to about your feelings or if you need help with a problem. What a school counselor does depends on what grades he or she works with.
As an elementary counselor, some of the duties that are assigned to me are: group counseling, classroom guidance presentations, facilitate the Intervention Assistance Team PK-5, Facilitate State and Achievement testing in grades 4-5, and individual counseling.
When meeting with a student in individual or group counseling, the great thing about talking to a counselor is that whatever the student discusses is confidential. The word confidential means private. So when I talk to a student I can not tell other people what we talk about.
However, there are three times when I would have to break confidentiality and tell someone what we talk about. These are:
- If a student is hurt by someone and I feel their safety is in danger.
- If a student tells me they are going to hurt someone and I feel that person’s safety is in danger.
-
If the student gives me permission to tell other people.
If I have to tell someone what we talk about, some of the people I might tell would be:
- The parent or guardian.
- The school principal.
- The police.
- Children Services.
-
The person I am given permission to tell.
Since I travel from building to building, I may not be in the school at the time a student requests to see me. If it is an extreme emergency and I am needed immediately, a student can tell their teacher or the office and they will call me. I will come see the student immediately.
An emergency would be…
- When someone’s safety is in danger.
- If someone in your family passed away recently.
-
Any other emergency not listed.
